On GLP-1? You Don’t Need to Cook a Different Dinner for Everyone

Family meals can still feel like family meals when you’re on a GLP-1 weight-loss journey.

If your appetite has changed since starting GLP-1 medication, sitting down for dinner with the family can sometimes feel surprisingly complicated. You may want a smaller portion or different balance of foods, while everyone else wants the meals they have always enjoyed. Before long, you can find yourself cooking one meal for the family and another for yourself. It doesn’t have to be that way.

A few simple changes to how you prepare and serve family meals on GLP-1 medication can help everyone eat together while still allowing you to make choices that suit your own appetite and nutritional needs.

Try a “build your own” family dinner

One of the easiest ideas is to prepare the main ingredients separately and put everything in the middle of the table. Think of a simple Mexican-style family meal with:

  • Turkey mince
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Grated cheese
  • Greek yoghurt or sour cream
  • Tortillas
  • Salsa
  • Hot sauce

Everyone starts with the same ingredients but builds the meal that works for them. Someone with a bigger appetite might choose a tortilla with mince, cheese and all the extras. You might prefer a smaller bowl with turkey mince, salad, tomatoes and a spoonful of Greek yoghurt.

Same dinner. Same table. Different portions.

And importantly, no second meal to cook.

Make protein one of the building blocks

If you are eating smaller amounts of food, it can be helpful to think about the nutritional value of what you are choosing rather than simply the size of the meal. Including a source of protein within your meal could be as simple as chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, tofu or Greek yoghurt.

Rather than creating a special “GLP-1 meal”, make these foods part of the meal available to everyone. This approach can work with far more than Mexican food. Try a build-your-own salad, jacket potatoes with different toppings, chicken and vegetables, homemade kebabs, wraps or a simple Mediterranean-style sharing table.

Let everyone choose their own portion

Family-style serving also removes some of the pressure around portion sizes. Instead of putting the same amount of food onto everybody’s plate, place dishes on the table and allow each person to choose what they would like.

Your appetite may vary from day to day. You don't have to match someone else's portion simply because you're eating together. Start with what feels manageable. You can always have more if you want it.

Keep the family experience

Changing the way you eat doesn't mean you need to remove yourself from family mealtimes. Set the table together. Put the dishes in the middle. Let everyone choose their favourites. Talk, laugh and enjoy being together. The aim isn't to make your meal look exactly like everybody else's.

The shared experience matters more than everyone having identical plates.

Make it easy enough to repeat

Healthy habits are much easier to maintain when they fit into everyday life.

You don't need elaborate recipes every evening. A meal that takes around 20 minutes, uses familiar ingredients and allows everyone to build their own plate can be much more practical than trying to cook two completely different dinners.

Try keeping a few reliable options available for busy evenings. Frozen vegetables, salad ingredients, eggs, tinned beans, cooked chicken, Greek yoghurt and microwaveable grains can all make assembling a simple meal easier. The best routine is often the one you can realistically repeat.

One family. One meal. Everyone chooses what works for them.
